About Locomotive-Specs.com

Who we are, where our locomotive and train data comes from, how spec sheets and rankings are produced and how to report a correction.

Our mission

Locomotive-Specs.com is an independent website created by railway enthusiasts. Our goal is to make the technical data of locomotives and trains easy to find, compare and understand, in seven languages, for enthusiasts, model makers, students, journalists and professionals.

What the database contains

The database covers more than 10,000 models built by about 1,000 manufacturers: electric, diesel and steam locomotives, electric and diesel multiple units, trams, railcars, control cars and service vehicles. Each spec sheet brings together the main characteristics of the model, the railway companies that operated it and a selection of photos.

Where the data comes from

Specifications are compiled from public sources, mainly Wikipedia articles in several languages and enthusiast databases, and gathered with the help of the trainspo.com community. The main source of each model is indicated on its spec sheet. Photos are hosted by trainspo.com, credited to their community and remain the property of their authors.

We normalise units, convert values to imperial units and check the data for obvious inconsistencies. Rankings exclude values that are clearly erroneous, but the data may still contain errors: it is provided for information only and should not be used for safety-critical or professional decisions.

How the overviews are written

The overview at the top of each spec sheet is generated with the help of an AI language model, using only the structured data of the model. If you notice a mistake, please tell us so that we can correct it.

Independence and advertising

Locomotive-Specs.com is not affiliated with any manufacturer, railway operator or photo website. The site is free to use and is financed by advertising served by Google AdSense. Advertising never influences the content of our spec sheets or rankings. Details on cookies and data are given in our privacy policy.

Corrections and contributions

Railway data is never complete. If you spot an error, have a better source or would like a photo to be removed, please contact us. Every message is read.
