Trams, also known as streetcars or light rail vehicles, run on tracks laid in the street or on reserved alignments in cities. They are usually supplied with 600 or 750 V direct current from an overhead wire.
Since the 1990s, almost all new trams have been low-floor, articulated vehicles between 20 and 45 metres long, allowing level boarding from street platforms. Major builders include Alstom, Siemens, CAF, Stadler, Škoda and Bombardier.
