Hydrogen trains use fuel cells that combine hydrogen with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, with water vapour as the only exhaust. They offer an alternative to diesel traction on lines where electrification would be too expensive.

The Alstom Coradia iLint became the world's first hydrogen-powered passenger train in regular service in Germany in 2018. Other manufacturers, including Siemens and Stadler, have since developed their own hydrogen trains and locomotives.
