I tram, detti anche tranvai o veicoli per metropolitana leggera, circolano su binari posati nella sede stradale o in sede riservata nelle città. Sono di norma alimentati a 600 o 750 V in corrente continua tramite una linea aerea.
Dagli anni Novanta quasi tutti i nuovi tram sono veicoli articolati a pianale ribassato, lunghi tra 20 e 45 metri, che consentono l'incarrozzamento a raso dalle banchine delle fermate. Tra i principali costruttori figurano Alstom, Siemens, CAF, Stadler, Škoda e Bombardier.
